Now ecchi is derived from the letter H, and the H is from hentai, in the west, as you probably know, hentai is commonly used to describe anime porn. But in reality it can mean pervert, naughty, lewd, even sex if its a noun, which I didn’t know lol. (Below the cut is an expansive beginners guide of terms and occurances in ecchi anime, so you know what to look for in an anime if you suspect some ecchi shenanigans lol)

As you also may know, H is a prefix to certain things, H-games, H-manga, etc etc. Tis like X rated stuff in the west I spose.

Though the meaning is interchangable, mostly its used for vaguely naughty content in anime, manga or games. Skimpy outfits, fanservice, stuff like that. Apparantly ecchi art is loosely comparible to pin up girls in girlie mags(is that what they’re called? Playboy and Maxim, that kinda thing.)

There are a number of common occurances in ecchi anime or manga, such as;

Clothing that mysteriously hangs onto every curve of the girl, stuck like glue to every bit of skin lol

Uniforms, ofc, men love uniforms, can’t see why they have the big attraction they do frankly, but to each their own lol. Costumes too, and random outfits like chinese dresses, which some guys go crazy for.

Giant boobs. Masamune lol. Which I really dont get, the boobs soooo big they’re just laughable… I mean REALLY? The ones that are completely unbelievable, I dont get the attraction one bit, taking funbags one step too far I thinks. The ones that are always perky are lolworthy too.

And ‘Marshmallow Hell’ a term I hadn’t heard of till today lol, when guys get smothered by breasts, like in Love Hina ofc, and many other harem anime. Reminds me of an ep of Ally McBeal lol, where a womans elderly husband was smothered by her chesticals in the night LOL.

Clothing thats ‘accidentally’ pulled or, or falls off, or as in Negima, blown off by a mega-sneeze lol. Classic lol.

Theres the obvious, such as fanservice, pantsu shots and cleavage.

Sukumizu are very popular, the tradtional school swimsuit. Super tight ofc, sometimes with additional cameltow, depends on the lewdness of the series in question really.

ENF is another term I’m unfamiliar with, apparantly means Embarrassed Nude Female lol. Which happens ALOT in Ken Akamatsu manga+anime versions.

Now this, is a very good example of ecchi.

An anime that comes to mind portraying literally everyone of the stereotypes is Kanokon. Tis the queen of lewd anime as far as I’ve concerned, without being actual ero anime. (Unlike Juden-chan and Queens Blade which do step into the ero-realm ALOT lol)

Kanokon is one that immediatly comes to mind lol. Didn’t plan to watch it, but I got kinda addicted to it lol. Thank god it was only a short series and not 26 eps long lol.

I thought, to kick off, I’d go with a manga I read when I was 13. I knew it was fairly unsuitable for me at the time, likewise for Love Hina. But I read it anyways, cos it was by Clamp. Back then I didn’t know the words for the different types of anime and manga, like ecchi, yuri, yaoi etc, so I didn’t know Chobits was ecchi, but a wonderful series none the less. Very tastefully done I thought at the time, and still do I think, haven’t read it in a while.

I think, and still believe, that Chii is the essence of Moe. One of the earlier examples of the thing thats so popular now. I do hope that most folks have read Chobits, or at least seen the anime, but some won’t have sadly, but its a classic, so you should! If your one of the folks who haven’t read or seen it, read it now, go out and buy it, or read it online if you have too. Same for the anime.

I love CLAMP to bits, and their other manga too, they make the barriers between audiences blur, as Chobits and Angelic Layer were both originally aimed at guys, shounen titles, but they appealed to both audiences, Angelic Layer, obviously doesn’t fall under the same genre as Chobits though lol.

When I first started reading Chobits I didn’t know if I should feel weird reading a comic with nudity in it, but it quickly became unimportant. I spose thats how it is now with the ecchi anime, manga or games I watch, read or play.

As for moe, in the Haruhi dub it was translated as ‘turn on’, but its nothing of the sort for me. For guys it may well be, but thats not why I like moe.
